The Five S's represent five areas of personal growth that are important in developing a well-rounded person.
Self
Physical, Emotional and Personal Development
College is a time of change, and the sorority is uniquely positioned to assist you in positively meeting new challenges and offering support and encouragement. Your sorority involvement will help you develop individual strength, establish a personal set of values and clarify your purpose as a student and a member. Self-pearl workshops include Mary Kay parties, taking a personal fun day to relieve the stresses of school, learning to work through high-pressure situations, and we even learn about self-defense with Public Safety!
Scholarship
Academic, Career and Lifestyle Skills and Planning
Delta Phi Epsilon recognizes academics as a priority and aims to enhance the college experience by providing information and assistance on educational concerns, intellectual development, career preparation, and life style planning. Our activities are centered on helping each sister excel in her classes while preparing them for life after college. We take trips to educational and fun locations such as the Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and Grounds for Sculpture. With NYC only a few minutes away, we are able to frequent various museums. We have a tutoring program set up for sisters, where we use each other’s academic strengths to form study buddy groups. We work a lot with Career Services to get resume writing, time management, and interview skill workshops.
Service
Community and Societal Awareness and Involvement
Delta Phi Epsilon aims to develop women who will be contributing members of society. Service Pearl Experiences should be designed to expose members to relevant societal issues and provide opportunities to make a positive impact within as well as outside of the sorority. We pride ourselves in the service that we do, and aim to put in at least 500 hours of service a semester. Some of our service projects include making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for soup kitchens, participating in Breast Cancer and Light the Night walks, raising money for Toys for Tots. We also put in a lot of time into raising awareness for our national philanthropies, Anorexia and Associated Disorders (ANAD) and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We hold a semi-annual tricky tray and various information tables to raise money for these causes.
Sisterhood
Organizational Knowledge and Skills
In order for the sorority to function as a family and have an environment that fosters positive personal and group development, the chapter itself must be strong. Individual sisters must have the skills to manage the affairs of the chapter and lead their fellow sisters. All members must have knowledge of how the sorority operates and what are the expectations are of the members. Sisters must also have an understanding of the Greek system, the benefits of being in a sorority, and the policies relating to Greek life. A strong sorority experience involves mutual friendship, support between members, and activities that increase the bonds of sisterhood. To achieve these goals, we hold semi-annual chapter retreats where we go over our plans for the up-coming semester. We have goal-setting workshops every semester so that each sister is clear on what we wish to accomplish to better our sorority. To bond as a sisterhood, we hold dinners, go out to various places, have movie nights, and just go out anywhere to have a good time together.
Social
Communication, Leadership and Social Development
Social Pearl Experiences explore diversity, multiculturalism, and gender issues, as well as leadership development. College graduates need the knowledge and experiences of social skills in order to effectively participate in one-on-one situations and small and large group settings. We hold a lot of workshops on cultural diversity, where we learn about different traditions for every culture. Joseph Rios, the leadership advisor, does workshops with us every semester to help us learn to individually become better leaders and how to efficiently work together to achieve our goals.
